As Natalia Danilova told: "Camps stood in each 5-10 kilometers. Stations near them had beautiful names of animals living there. Eagle, Swan, Wolf and others". Natalia used to go to zones of imprisonments together with the leadership of the political department. She knew chiefs of the 501st building very well. Once she almost became the victim of one criminal-convict. It happened on the station Orlinaya (Eagle's). A young convict, who brought firewood, bread and water to the train lost pretty Natalia in the card game. Employees of the political department of GULAG after checkup the zone at 8 o'clock in the evening had to conduct the conference with the camp leadership. They stayed for some minutes and this saved her life. Natalia Danilova recalls it with horror: "I heard knock at the door. I opened and saw a familiar young man in underwear with a knife in his hand. I started screaming. Employees of the political department rushed to me. They quickly took him away. Then it was cleared up that he lost me in the card game. I was terrified and decided that I should leave as soon as possible. But they calmed me up: "if he had not killed you so you will live long". Natalia Danilova had to work on ice pass across the river between Salekhard and Labytnanghy. There are many legends about this "road of life", which are passed from mouth to mouth.
Natalia Danilova shared her reminiscences: "When I came here to the North, the ice pass already acted. The severe weather was during those years. Frosts 60C degrees below zero were in November. Already in October ice was grown with the help of powerful water-cannons. The rails and ties were laid on. The wooden wagon 86, where Natalia was a conductor, was connected to the locomotive and transported about 40 people to the opposite bank. They went from Salekhard to Nadym, or from Labytnanghy to Moscow. The ice railroad acted 5 winters and after liquidation of the building it lost its activity, stopped existing. It was forgotten like unnecessary page of history of our country.

All convicts were the unpaid working power. Such regime was made in the country, many people were imprisoned - and it needed to find work for them. Not simple convicts were required for this work but political ones - "public enemies" - according to Zhighin's words there were 80% of such convicts. After all they would not kill, steal and they are responsible workers. The colonel Loidin controlled the "camp part" of convicts, there were two kinds of blanks: one is the complete story of a convict and another for clause 58, political. Replacement was 5-7 thousand people per year. And leaders of the building learnt how to demand from the minister that it does not need to send those, who are just for being watched. So, those, who "weaken defense capacity of the country", "for grains", "for 15 minutes of being late to work", military men, ones who overcame fascist camps were sent here. |
